What is Takoyaki?

Takoyaki is a popular Japanese street food with round batter balls filled with tender octopus. Topped with takoyaki sauce, creamy mayo, and bonito flakes, it's a delicious snack that’s crispy outside, soft inside, and full of savory flavor. It’s a fun and tasty snack often enjoyed at festivals or casual gatherings in Japan.

The Origin Story

The idea for Maru Maru actually started as a bit of a joke! Back in the spring of 2023, I (Shiho) made takoyaki at a friend’s gathering, and everyone seemed to love both the food and the fun vibe. Ever since then, Austin kept saying, “You should start selling takoyaki—it’s really, really good!” Fast forward a bit, and one day, Austin and I were just casually chatting, and he brought up that same Takoyaki event from 2023. He cracked another joke about selling it, and I said, “Yeah, that would be fun!” Then he asked, “Do you actually want to do it?” and without thinking too much, I said, “Sure, why not?”

A little while later, out of nowhere, Austin sends me a picture of a vacuum sealer he bought, saying, “Shiho, look what I got, haha!” And just like that, what started as a joke turned into something real. That’s how Maru Maru was born—a fun, unexpected journey that we’re so excited to share with everyone!

Our Method

We handcraft each takoyaki ball to restaurant-quality standards and freeze it immediately to preserve freshness. Using the best ingredients we can find, we never skimp on essentials like octopus or sausage. We’ve spent a lot of time perfecting this recipe, ensuring it delivers the most authentic Japanese flavor. We’ve also optimized it for re-heating, so it tastes just as delicious after being frozen.
